In an interview with an Indian broadcaster, Akram said, “Imagine chasing 150 or 160 runs on a tough wicket—Babar’s presence could be extremely effective. The style of play might need slight adjustments, but in such situations, a batter like Babar is essential.”
Currently, Babar Azam is out of the T20 team. He has not been included since the South Africa series last December, and the selectors did not pick him for the ongoing Asia Cup either, as they are testing new players for next year’s World Cup.
Akram added, “Babar and Rizwan have been given plenty of opportunities as openers. They have performed well, but the consistency expected has not come. That’s why selectors are giving chances to new talents.”
However, Akram welcomed the current team setup. He praised captain Salman Ali Agha’s leadership, saying, “These players have the potential to defeat top teams.” He also appreciated the selectors’ foresight in building the team.
