In the U.S. state of Utah, police have arrested 22-year-old Tyler Robinson in connection with the killing of far-right activist Charlie Clark. Clark was shot and killed while delivering a speech at a university event on Wednesday.
Authorities reported that after a 33-hour manhunt, Robinson was apprehended on Thursday night. His father and a local youth pastor played a key role in persuading him to surrender.
U.S. President Donald Trump initially confirmed the arrest and called for the death penalty against the suspect. The murder has once again highlighted deep political divisions in the United States.
Utah Governor Spencer Cox stated that Robinson entered the Utah Valley University campus about an hour before the incident. CCTV footage shows that he was wearing the same outfit at the time of his arrest.
Police reports indicate that Robinson had hidden his weapon in a bush. The recovered firearm was an imported Mauser rifle, with the bullet casings engraved with “Hey Fascist! Catch!” and “O Bella Ciao.” Notably, Bella Ciao is an Italian resistance song.
Investigators noted that those close to the suspect observed him becoming increasingly politically radical in recent years. Messages exchanged with a university roommate revealed that he was planning a “rifle collection” and “weapon concealment.”
While students were shocked by the killing of Charlie Clark, the news of Robinson’s arrest has provided some relief, according to Utah Valley University students.
Prosecutors have stated that Robinson will formally face charges of murder, obstruction of justice, and unlawful use of a weapon next Tuesday.
