On Friday, June 27, the Republican-controlled US Senate rejected a Democratic Party-backed proposal aimed at limiting President Donald Trump’s authority to conduct military operations against Iran. This decision came just hours after Trump indicated he was considering another bombing strike on Iran.

The proposed measure required the President to obtain Congressional approval before initiating any new military action against Iran. However, the proposal was defeated by a narrow vote of 53 to 47.

While party lines were mostly followed during the vote, two senators broke ranks: Senator John Fetterman (Democrat, Pennsylvania) voted against the proposal alongside Republicans and Senator Rand Paul (Republican, Kentucky) voted in favor with the Democrats.

The primary sponsor of the proposal, Senator Tim Kaine, has long advocated for limiting any US president’s power to declare war, regardless of party affiliation.
