The United Nations Security Council has condemned the Israeli attack in Doha, Qatar, and called for calming the situation. Ahead of an emergency meeting on Thursday, the 15-member council issued a joint statement following Tuesday’s attack, including Israel’s close ally, the United States.

Expressing solidarity with Qatar, the statement said, “Reducing tensions is now extremely urgent.” However, the council refrained from directly naming Israel. The statement, drafted by France and the United Kingdom, also emphasized that the release of hostages and ending the war and suffering in Gaza should be the top priority.

While five members of Hamas were reportedly killed in Tuesday’s attack, the organization claimed that its top leadership survived. Additionally, one Qatari security official was killed. At the time of the attack, Hamas leaders were reportedly discussing a new deal proposed by U.S. President Donald Trump.

Although the United States usually plays a leading role in defending Israel at the UN, it issued a strong reaction this time. Acting U.S. Ambassador Dorothy Shea stated, “Unilateral bombings in Qatar do not advance the interests of either Israel or the United States.”

UN correspondent Gabriel Elizondo reported that, according to diplomatic sources, while the U.S. opposed using stronger language in the statement, the Security Council’s unanimous stance is considered highly significant.
