Two young men killed by lightning while fishing in haor

Two young men, identified as Mokarram, 35, and Shah Alam, 30, were killed by lightning while fishing in a haor in Karimganj, Kishoreganj.

The incident occurred at around 6am on Saturday (September 12) in the Terkona Haor area of Chong Noagaon in Sutarpur Union of the upazila.

Mokarram was the son of Nazrul Islam of the village. Shah Alam was the son of Ishaq Mia of the same village.

According to local sources, Mokarram and Shah Alam went fishing in the Terkona Haor near their homes early in the morning. At around 6am, a storm and rain suddenly began, and they were struck by lightning. Both of them sustained critical injuries.

Local residents later attempted to rescue them and take them to Karimganj Upazila Health Complex. However, both men died on the way before reaching the hospital.

Police went to the scene after being informed of the incident. Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Karimganj Police Station Mohammad Soheb Khan confirmed the incident and said police were sent to the scene immediately after receiving the news.

According to local residents, the lightning strike occurred suddenly amid adverse weather conditions as the two men had gone to the haor to fish early in the morning. The tragic deaths of the two young men from the same village have cast a pall of mourning over the area.
