Two people were killed in separate train accidents at Phulbarigate in the Khan Jahan Ali Police Station area of Khulna city. The two incidents occurred within a few hours of each other, in the early morning and later in the morning on Saturday (October 17). The deceased were a young man and an elderly man.

One of the victims was Mahafuzul Islam Siam, son of Nur Islam and a resident of the Mirerdanga area of Phulbari in the city. The other victim was identified as Zainal Abedin.

According to local sources, Mahafuzul Islam Siam was killed at around 5:40 am on Saturday when the Khulna-bound Shipsha Express, which had departed from Dhaka, reached the vicinity of the Phulbarigate railway crossing and struck him.

A second accident occurred at around 9 am, approximately 100 yards from the location of the first incident. Zainal Abedin, an elderly man, was killed after being struck by the Rupsha Express train travelling from Ishwardi to Khulna.

Sub-Inspector SM Raihan of the Khulna Railway Police Station, also known as the Government Railway Police (GRP), confirmed both deaths.

He said Siam’s death appeared suspicious, prompting the authorities to recover his body and send it to Khulna Medical College Hospital for an autopsy.

Meanwhile, the police officer said Zainal Abedin had been mentally unwell.

The two deaths in quick succession have raised concerns among local residents about railway safety in the Phulbarigate area. However, the actual circumstances surrounding Siam’s death are expected to become clearer after the autopsy and the relevant investigation.
