U.S. President Donald Trump has announced that he is initiating a $15 billion defamation and libel lawsuit against The New York Times.
On Monday, Trump posted on his social media platform Truth Social: “The New York Times has long been spreading lies, defamation, and libel against me. This will not continue.”
Trump specifically referenced the newspaper’s support for Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential election, claiming that the paper has now become the “mouthpiece of the radical Democratic Party.” He further stated that the lawsuit will be filed in Florida, a state known as a Republican stronghold.
The President alleged that The New York Times published editorials in the center of the front page to support his rival Harris, something he claims has never happened before. He also accused other media outlets of using “highly sophisticated tactics” to distort information and images targeting him.
Trump has previously filed lawsuits against the Times. In 2021, he filed a case claiming that the newspaper conspired with his niece, Mary Trump, in publishing his tax records; however, the court dismissed the case in 2023.
In the same year, he also filed a $475 million defamation lawsuit against CNN, alleging that the network compared him to Hitler. That case too was dismissed by a federal court.
