Ahead of the 13th National Parliamentary Elections, internal disputes emerged in BNP after Nazrul Islam Manju was nominated for Khulna-2 (Wards 16–31). Local leaders claim that Manju has been distant from party activities and previously harmed party unity.
BNP’s acting chairman Tarique Rahman had instructed candidates to resolve disputes and campaign unitedly, but in Khulna-2, this directive has not yet been implemented. Even after the initial nomination announcement, the two factions held separate programs on Biplob and Songhoti Day.
During a meeting at the party office on KD Ghosh Road, more than a hundred local leaders expressed concerns that Manju had not maintained contact with the grassroots and had previously made inappropriate remarks about the Zia family. They suggested considering other acceptable leaders or Rokeebul Islam Bakul as a candidate.
Manju’s supporters said he remained active politically and socially and followed central directives. Attempts to contact him directly failed, but he told the media, “Although there are differences in Khulna, we will handle them. The nomination is final; the focus is on winning the election.”
City BNP General Secretary Shafiqul Alam Tuhin said, “Grassroots leaders are responsible to the party. Their views will reach central leadership, and Tarique Rahman’s decision will be final.”
Analysts warn that if the internal dispute in Khulna-2 is not resolved quickly, it may create an opportunity for the Awami League.
