The discussion surrounding Sydney Sweeney never seems to stop. Whether because of bold scenes on screen, unconventional appearances in advertisements or aspects of her personal life, the American actress regularly makes headlines. But beyond the controversies, her career tells a different story. Through a series of acclaimed roles, successful films and involvement in production, she has steadily strengthened her position in Hollywood.
Today, September 12, is Sydney Sweeney’s birthday. Born on this day in 1997 in Spokane, Washington, United States, the actress spent her childhood in a rural environment. From an early age, she was interested in both sports and academics. Alongside participating in sports such as football, softball, skiing and wakeboarding, she also trained in taekwondo, jiu-jitsu and kickboxing.
Her interest in acting developed at a very young age. She would perform different characters in front of family members. However, her parents initially did not take her desire to pursue acting as a profession very seriously.
The situation changed when a film began shooting locally. At the time, Sydney prepared a PowerPoint presentation to convince her parents to allow her to audition. She also presented a five-year plan for her acting career. Her determination eventually persuaded her family to support her ambitions.
At just 13, Sydney moved to Los Angeles with her family. But success did not come immediately after arriving in the city of dreams. Instead, she spent a long period attending audition after audition, facing rejection and taking on small roles.
Although she appeared in popular series such as “Pretty Little Liars,” “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Criminal Minds” and “The Handmaid’s Tale,” she had to wait several years before gaining widespread recognition. According to Sweeney, the five-year plan she had created during childhood took nearly a decade to materialize in reality.
During this long journey, her family also faced financial pressure. The cost of living in Los Angeles and supporting her acting career eventually pushed the family into serious financial difficulty. Her parents’ divorce and the family’s bankruptcy filing made the period particularly difficult. However, those experiences made Sydney more resilient.
Sweeney came to the attention of audiences through her performances in “Everything Sucks!” and “Sharp Objects” in 2018. Her profile grew further after she appeared in “The Handmaid’s Tale.” However, the biggest turning point in her career came with HBO’s acclaimed series “Euphoria.”
Her performance as Cassie Howard in the series earned widespread praise. Sydney convincingly portrayed a complex character navigating emotions, relationships, identity and uncertainty. After that, she could no longer be viewed simply as an emerging actress.
Her role as Olivia Mossbacher in “The White Lotus” was another important addition to her career. She received Emmy nominations for both series. Her 2022 Emmy nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress for “The White Lotus” became a major recognition of her acting ability.
Some viewers had assumed that Sweeney was perhaps more comfortable in glamour-driven roles. However, she challenged that perception to a significant extent with the film “Reality.” The movie, centered on real-life figure Reality Winner, earned critical praise for her performance.
She subsequently underwent rigorous preparation for “Christy,” a film based on the life of professional boxer Christy Martin. In addition to boxing training for the role, she made significant changes to her physical appearance. Through the project, Sweeney sought to demonstrate not only her star image but also her capabilities as an actress.
Alongside television, she has gradually established herself in film as well. Sweeney has appeared in a variety of movies, from “Once Upon a Time...in Hollywood” to “Madame Web.” However, the 2023 romantic comedy “Anyone But You” marked a major change in her film career.
The film, in which she starred opposite Glen Powell, became a box-office success and brought her greater recognition among international audiences. At the same time, she began seeking greater creative control beyond acting.
Through her production company, Fifty-Fifty Films, Sweeney has served as a producer on projects such as “Anyone But You” and “Immaculate.” In other words, alongside acting in front of the camera, she is expanding her role in decision-making behind the camera as well.
Her presence in the advertising and brand world is also significant. She has worked with brands and companies including Armani Beauty, Miu Miu, Laneige, Ford, Samsung and American Eagle. In particular, American Eagle’s 2025 campaign titled “Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans” generated widespread discussion on social media.
Because of her performances in bold scenes in “Euphoria” and other projects, Sydney Sweeney has regularly attracted public attention. She has also faced considerable criticism over them. However, she has said in various interviews that she has no intention of avoiding such scenes when they are required by a role.
The central message of her comments has been that an actress’s job is to portray different kinds of characters. Therefore, rather than judging her acting based on a particular scene, she has consistently called on audiences to consider the work as a whole.
Sweeney is expanding her reach in three areas—acting, production and business. She currently has several major projects ahead of her.
Among them is “Gundam,” the Hollywood adaptation of the popular Japanese mecha franchise. She is starring alongside Noah Centineo in the project. She is also expected to return as Millie Calloway in “The Housemaid’s Secret,” which also stars Kirsten Dunst.
She will also take on a leading role in “The Custom of the Country,” based on the novel by Edith Wharton. Sweeney is also involved in producing the film.
In addition, she will portray legendary actress Kim Novak in the film “Scandalous!” As a result, audiences can expect to see Sweeney take on a range of different roles in the years ahead.
Once an aspiring actress who moved from a small-town environment to Hollywood and faced rejection after rejection at auditions, Sweeney is now establishing herself not only as an actress but also in production and business. Although controversy has remained a part of her career, another side of Sydney Sweeney’s journey is her continued effort to establish herself on a larger scale at every stage. On her birthday, therefore, her career can be viewed not merely as a subject of public discussion, but also as the story of a young actress who has risen through years of struggle.
