PNN News Desk: Dhaka
Students of seven colleges in the capital have announced a new program demanding the rapid implementation of the proposed Dhaka Central University. According to the representatives of the Seven Colleges University Transformation Movement and Statistics student Md. Naeem Hawladar of Dhaka College, a public gathering will be held on Monday (19 January) at Science Lab Mor to press for the final issuance of the ordinance.
The students will assemble at 11 a.m. at the “Ordinance Stage” at Science Lab Mor. From there, they will announce further steps in the movement.
The draft law to establish Dhaka Central University by merging seven government colleges was posted on the Ministry of Education’s website on 24 September last year. Following discussions and differences of opinion, the ministry held multiple meetings with stakeholders. Based on feedback, the draft was revised and updated.
Meetings with students at the Education Building on 7 and 8 December included discussions about issuing the ordinance in early January. However, the ordinance was not issued on time, prompting students to resume protests. The students demand that the President issue the final ordinance immediately.
Earlier, on 14 and 15 January, students conducted half-day blockade programs in Science Lab, Technical, and Tanti Bazar areas, disrupting traffic and causing public inconvenience. The students hope that the new program will attract high-level government attention and expedite the establishment of Dhaka Central University.
