On inspection, the RAKSU building behind Kazi Nazrul Islam Auditorium appears run-down. Inside, trash and debris are scattered, with insufficient chairs, tables, or seating space. Outside, there is no signboard, leaving the building without a clear identity. Various cultural organizations currently use different rooms, leaving inadequate space for student union activities.
Students expressed, “Although there is excitement on campus about the RAKSU election, the building’s poor condition is disappointing. The administration should take immediate steps to renovate it.” Majidul Islam, a law student, said, “It is disheartening that a historic building, where the leadership of future generations will emerge, lacks a proper environment.”
RAKSU Treasurer Professor Setaur Rahman stated, “A committee has been formed for renovation. Relocating cultural and social organizations and installing a signboard will be implemented very soon.”
Additionally, the students’ council rooms in the university’s 11 male and 6 female halls are in poor condition. Many rooms have been converted into newspaper or reading rooms. Professor Dr. Jamirul Islam, principal of Bijoy-24 Hall, said, “Renovation plans are underway, and other halls will receive attention soon.”
Pro-Vice Chancellor (Academic), Professor Dr. Farid Uddin Khan, added, “A committee is already working on installing the RAKSU building signboard and interior renovations. We hope the renovation and rehabilitation will be completed soon.”
This election marks the beginning of a new chapter in student politics at Rajshahi University after a long hiatus, but many feel that the building’s poor condition could impact the overall experience.
