Lieutenant General (Retd.) Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, Advisor to the Ministry of Home Affairs, has stated a firm stance regarding the impartial role of law enforcement personnel ahead of the 13th National Parliament elections and referendums. He clearly mentioned that if any personnel become involved with individuals, political parties, or specific agendas, disciplinary actions along with stringent legal measures will be taken against them.

On Tuesday morning (3 February), during a medal-awarding ceremony held at the Bangladesh Coast Guard headquarters in Agargaon, Dhaka, he made these remarks while addressing the event as the chief guest.

The Home Affairs Advisor emphasized that the government will not show any laxity in ensuring the neutrality of the Coast Guard and all law enforcement agencies during the upcoming parliamentary election and referendum. He further stated that the government’s primary priority is to ensure a free, fair, and peaceful election.

Commending the Coast Guard’s operations, Chowdhury mentioned that the force has played a crucial role in securing coastal areas and inland waterways. He highlighted their bravery in preventing illegal fishing, arms and drug smuggling, human trafficking, and piracy. He also noted the force’s regular patrolling activities have achieved significant success in rescuing distressed vessels and seafarers.

He further mentioned the Coast Guard’s role in disaster management. During cyclones, floods, and other calamities, the force has helped warn coastal communities, conduct rescue operations, distribute relief and winter clothing, and assist in managing the Rohingya crisis, making their contributions worthy of recognition.

Chowdhury added that by enhancing security in riverine border areas and coastal regions, the Coast Guard not only ensures internal security but also contributes to regional maritime safety. He noted that in recognition of this contribution, countries such as the United States and Australia have expressed interest in joint operations with the Coast Guard.

He also mentioned that as part of nationwide election security measures, around 900,000 law enforcement personnel have been deployed, including 3,585 members of the Coast Guard. So far, 100 platoons have been deployed in various districts of Barisal, Chattogram, and Khulna divisions.

Calling corruption the biggest enemy of the state, the Home Affairs Advisor said it weakens state institutions and erodes public trust. He urged everyone to work collectively against corruption.

During the ceremony, 40 Coast Guard members were awarded various medals for their outstanding service. Senior Secretary Nasimul Ghani, Director General of the Coast Guard Rear Admiral Md. Ziaul Haque, and other senior officials were present at the event.
