Amid rising tensions in India-Bangladesh relations, newly appointed Bangladeshi High Commissioner M. Riaz Hamidullah is scheduled to meet West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee at Nabanna, Kolkata, on Monday afternoon.
While the meeting is officially being described as a courtesy call, it has sparked discussions regarding its deeper diplomatic significance.
High Commissioner Hamidullah arrived in Kolkata on Saturday. He assumed office in New Delhi last month after a 10-month vacancy in the post and recently presented his credentials to Indian President Droupadi Murmu. This is his first visit to West Bengal—India's state sharing a long border with Bangladesh—since taking office. The meeting with Mamata Banerjee is seen as particularly notable, as she has not met with any Bangladeshi High Commissioner since her meeting with then-High Commissioner Syed Muazzem Ali in 2016.
Observers note that Mamata Banerjee has expressed anger over the alleged pushbacks of Indian citizens across the border as "suspected Bangladeshis." Additionally, she had earlier written a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressing concern and urging action over the recent attack on Rabindranath Tagore’s ancestral home in Shahzadpur, Sirajganj—an iconic site of cultural and historical importance.
It is expected that during the meeting, High Commissioner Hamidullah may present Mamata with the "actual facts" surrounding the Shahzadpur incident. Border tensions and overall bilateral relations are also likely to be discussed. The issue of sharing water from common rivers like the Teesta may be raised to gauge the West Bengal Chief Minister’s position on the matter.
Sources also indicate that Hamidullah’s visit includes another important engagement—he is expected to hold a private meeting with Jawhar Sircar, former CEO of Prasar Bharati and former TMC Member of Parliament, on Tuesday morning. A variety of issues may come up in that meeting. It remains unclear whether the High Commissioner will also meet the Governor of West Bengal during this trip.
