China’s film market has recently experienced a slowdown. The influence of Hollywood has declined, and a local film, ‘It’s Okay’, has climbed to the top of the box office. However, overall cinema revenue in the country has dropped by nearly 50 percent compared to last year.

According to market analysis firm Artisan Gateway, ‘It’s Okay’ earned approximately 31 million yuan (around 4.6 million USD) over the second weekend of April. Produced by China Film and directed by Yang Lina, the film’s total earnings have now reached about 18.7 million USD.

Typically, China’s box office is dominated by animation and action films. However, this family-oriented story has managed to attract audience attention as an exception.

The film revolves around a young woman named Shu Ke, whose life takes a turn when her ill mother suddenly returns. Medical challenges and emotional tensions from past relationships create a deeply moving situation between mother and daughter. This human and realistic storytelling is what has captivated audiences.

Analysts believe that despite the overall market slowdown, audiences are still returning to cinemas for strong storytelling and emotional depth. However, concerns remain that the downturn could have long-term effects on China’s film industry.
