Shahjadi sent to jail from hospital in infant theft case

Shahjadi, who was receiving medical treatment in the hospital, was sent to court on Sunday afternoon by the Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court in Khulna. No lawyer or bail petitioner appeared on her behalf, so the hearing did not take place. The court later ordered her transfer to prison.

Since there was no one to care for her 11-day-old baby girl, the police also took the infant to Khulna District Jail along with Shahjadi.

According to the case background, on September 11, Shahjadi, wife of Sirajul Islam from Rampal, Bagerhat, gave birth to a baby girl at a hospital in Rupsha, Khulna. Family members, expecting a boy, were disappointed. On September 15, the hospital reported the theft of a four-day-old newborn boy. CCTV footage and police efforts led to the baby being recovered and handed over to Shahjadi’s mother, Nargis Begum. Shahjadi and her mother were subsequently charged under the Human Trafficking Act.

The investigating officer stated that Shahjadi, now healthy, was presented in court and, following due procedure, sent to prison. On humanitarian grounds, the infant has been allowed to stay with her mother.
