Staff Report: PNN
The acquisition of Bangladesh’s left-arm pacer Mustafizur Rahman by Kolkata Knight Riders for 90 million rupees in the IPL auction has sparked a political controversy, with Bollywood superstar and KKR owner Shah Rukh Khan being called a ‘traitor’ by Uttar Pradesh BJP hardliner Sangeet Som.
Indian media reports state that Sangeet Som reacted angrily to the decision to sign Mustafizur for a large sum. In a statement, he said foreign players—especially from Bangladesh—should not be allowed to play in India. He even threatened that Mustafizur would not be allowed to set foot outside the airport if he came to play in India.
Som also used strong words against Shah Rukh Khan, accusing him of acting against national interest using the affection and money of the Indian people. According to him, he has previously been accused of aiding Pakistan or spending millions on foreign players, and such actions are unacceptable.
This statement has sparked widespread discussion and criticism on social media. Many see it as an unwanted political intrusion into sports, while others argue that the IPL is a commercial and international cricket league where player selection is based on skill, not nationality.
Shah Rukh Khan and Kolkata Knight Riders have not yet issued an official response to these allegations.
