Following joint airstrikes on Iran by the United States and Israel, President Donald Trump claimed that the purpose of the operation was to “ensure the freedom of the Iranian people.” Analysts, however, note a significant gap between the stated objectives and the actual strategy, cautioning that Tehran’s government cannot be dismantled solely by airstrikes.

Hours after the strikes, Trump addressed the Iranian people, saying that their “moment of freedom” has arrived and that the United States will hand over the situation to the public. His statement implied that removing the current structure of Tehran’s government could be the ultimate goal.

Policy analysts in Washington, however, warned that regime change through air power alone is historically very limited. They argue that substantial political change requires strong internal opposition or allied forces, which are currently not visible in Iran.

Within the administration, different voices also emerged. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth spoke of relatively limited objectives, emphasizing the mission’s primary focus on weakening Iran’s nuclear, drone, and naval capabilities to prevent the country from asserting regional aggression.

Democratic leaders have questioned the necessity and planning of the strike. Senator Elizabeth Warren criticized the administration for engaging in the conflict without a clear roadmap, highlighting the lack of explanation regarding the endgame. Senator Richard Blumenthal expressed similar concerns, warning that ground troops might become necessary if the situation escalates.

Recent public opinion polls indicate limited support for the war in the United States. Analysts predict that direct U.S. military involvement could further reduce public backing.

Following the strikes, regional tensions have escalated rapidly. Tehran reportedly retaliated with drone and missile attacks, and multiple strikes targeted Israel. U.S.-associated installations in the Middle East are on alert.

President Trump stated that the operation would quickly achieve its objectives, yet also hinted that the conflict could last several weeks, leaving uncertainty regarding the true purpose and duration. Analysts warn that without a clear strategy and endgame, the conflict could lead to prolonged regional instability.
