The Kuwaiti government has reported that one of the country’s power and water desalination facilities has been targeted by Iranian missile attacks. On the 35th day of the Iran-US-Israel conflict, the Gulf countries are experiencing widespread retaliatory attacks.
Kuwaiti authorities said the facility was hit before noon local time on Friday. The extent of the damage is not yet clear. The state news agency KUNA reported that a few hours before the attack, the Mina Al-Ahmadi oil refinery was also targeted by drones. Some operational units caught fire, but no personnel were injured.
Hotlines and fire brigades have been deployed to the site, and the Environment Authority is monitoring air quality in the area. KUNA clarified that any false rumors regarding the nature of the damage or potential radioactive threats are being dismissed.
Al Jazeera correspondent Malik Traina in Kuwait City reported that this is the third attack on the refinery. The local population remains on “high alert.” He said, “This is one of the largest refineries in the Middle East and is extremely important for meeting local demand.” Being the closest country to Iran, Kuwait is at higher risk of attacks, he added.
On Friday, KUNA reported “enemy missile and drone attacks” over Kuwait. Sirens sounded across the country, and explosions were heard in the sky.
Meanwhile, the UAE Ministry of Defense stated that the country is facing a new wave of Iranian missile and drone attacks. Abu Dhabi Media Office reported that fires broke out at the Habshan gas facility due to drone debris. Operations there were temporarily suspended.
The ministry said that on Thursday alone, UAE air defenses intercepted 19 ballistic missiles and 26 drones. At least two soldiers were killed, and 191 people of various nationalities were injured.
Saudi Arabia also intercepted a drone in its airspace at night, and Bahrain issued missile warnings three times.
Iran is carrying out preemptive attacks on local information and technology companies in retaliation for US and Israeli attacks. On Friday, the state news agency IRNA reported that Dubai’s Oracle data center was targeted, though the Dubai Media Office dismissed this claim as “false.”
Additionally, Amazon Web Services confirmed that two of its data centers in the UAE were directly affected, and one center in Bahrain was damaged in a nearby drone attack. The attacks caused partial and limited technical disruptions.
Iran’s military spokesman, Ebrahim Jolfaghari, warned that if the US threatens Iran’s power plants, Tehran will initiate retaliatory attacks on energy and IT infrastructure in the Gulf region.
