In a devastating fire at Pomra Kaderia Para in Rangunia Upazila of Chattogram, a grandmother and her granddaughter tragically lost their lives. The incident occurred on Wednesday (24 December) around 8 AM. The fire quickly spread in the densely populated area, engulfing house after house.

The deceased were Rumi Akter (55) and her five-year-old granddaughter Jannat Akter. Locals said Rumi Akter was the main support of her family and took care of everyone. Little Jannat was the joy and spirit of the household.

Eyewitnesses reported that panic spread as the fire engulfed the area. Despite efforts to escape, Rumi Akter and Jannat could not be rescued. The fire destroyed eight houses completely. Fire service units reached the scene and controlled the fire after prolonged efforts. Fire service team leader Jahedur Rahman mentioned that preliminary investigation suggests the fire was caused by an electrical short circuit.

Affected families estimate a financial loss of approximately 3 million BDT, but they emphasized that the loss is not just monetary—the fire claimed loved ones’ lives, destroyed a child’s laughter, and shattered many dreams. The neighborhood remains in mourning despite the fire being controlled.
