In response to a long-standing demand from students, Rajshahi University (RU) is set to implement a major reform in its exam script evaluation process. From now on, a coding system will be used instead of roll numbers, which the university administration states will ensure transparency and impartiality in examinations. This new rule will apply to students of all sessions.
This groundbreaking decision was made yesterday, Monday (July 14), during a meeting of the university's Academic Council.
Professor Dr. Enamul Haque, an Academic Council member and head of the Medical Psychology department, stated, "The decision to use a coding system was made to ensure transparency and impartiality. When roll numbers are present, examiners have the opportunity, even if unintentional, to favor known students with extra marks. The coding system will eliminate such suspicions." He further added that under this system, there will be no roll numbers on exam scripts, and it will be implemented across all sessions of the university.
Notably, on June 29, students under the banner of 'RU Reform Movement' protested in front of the administration building with nine demands. One of their key demands was the implementation of a roll-number-free script evaluation system. Students had alleged that some teachers would give higher marks to favored students and lower marks to disliked ones, questioning the impartiality of the evaluation.
Shah Paran Ullash, a law student, welcomed the decision, stating, "This is a landmark decision. It will not only increase transparency but also strengthen student trust. I believe this kind of change in the university's education system will send a positive message to students. This decision could also serve as a reproducible example for other universities in the country."
This new method is expected to bring a positive change to Rajshahi University's education system and fulfill the long-standing expectations of its students.
