Students of Dhaka University of Engineering and Technology (DUET) have continued their protest for the third consecutive day, declaring the newly appointed Vice-Chancellor (VC) unwelcome. Tension spread across the campus on Saturday morning after rumors circulated that the new VC might enter the campus.
At around 8:30 AM on Saturday, a large number of police personnel entered the university campus. However, as students began gathering, the police later moved out of the campus and took positions on the main road outside.
At one stage, protesting students locked the main gate of the university. During this time, many students were seen gathering in front of the gate, and some were even seen playing cricket there. Later at around 11:30 AM, the police left the university area.
On May 14, the then Vice-Chancellor of the university, Professor Mohammad Zainal Abedin, was relieved from his post and Professor Dr. Mohammad Iqbal of the Industrial and Production Engineering Department of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology was appointed as the new VC.
Since the announcement of the appointment, dissatisfaction spread across the DUET campus. Students later declared the newly appointed VC unwelcome and placed protest banners at the main gate of the university.
The students alleged that their opinions were ignored in the appointment process of such an important administrative post. Protesters have demanded an immediate reconsideration of the decision.
