In Faridpur, onion prices have surged rapidly within just 10 days. At the wholesale level, the price per maund (approximately 40 kg) has risen by as much as 1,000 taka, reaching between 2,500 to 2,600 taka. This increase has also impacted the retail market, where onion prices now hover around 70 to 75 taka per kilogram.

Md. Shaheduzzaman, Deputy Director of the Department of Agricultural Extension in Faridpur, said that although onion production in the district is good, farmers are worried as they are not receiving appropriate prices for their crops. Additionally, with the jute harvesting season beginning, farmers are unable to focus on selling onions, leading to a reduced supply in the market.

Some traders are accused of hoarding onions to take advantage of the shortage and push prices higher. Wholesalers and businessmen from various areas of Faridpur have reported that there has been no import of foreign onions, which has worsened the situation.

Local consumers have expressed dissatisfaction with the price hike. A housewife commented, “Onion prices have doubled in just one week, which is very difficult for people with limited income.”

Faridpur’s Additional Deputy Commissioner, Sohrab Hossain, stated that strict actions will be taken against illegal hoarders, and the district administration along with the Consumer Rights Department is jointly monitoring the situation. He urged everyone to cooperate in maintaining market stability.
