Chattogram Port has taken another step toward modernization as a vessel carrying four advanced Q-gantry cranes arrived at the Patenga Container Terminal (PCT). Officials say the new equipment will significantly increase container handling speed and efficiency.

The crane-laden vessel docked at the PCT jetty on Friday evening. Experienced pilots and tugboats were used to ensure safe docking operations, according to port authorities.

The cranes were procured by Red Sea Gateway Terminal International (RSGTI), the operator of the terminal. The equipment, worth approximately 30 million US dollars, is expected to modernize and improve container transportation efficiency.

Special safety measures were taken during unloading, including restrictions on vessel movement in the Karnaphuli River area.

Port officials said the Q-gantry cranes are primarily used for fast and safe loading and unloading of containers from large cargo ships. Their use will reduce vessel turnaround time and improve terminal efficiency.

Sources said the terminal’s annual container handling capacity is expected to more than double once the cranes become operational.

Experts believe this development will enhance Bangladesh’s competitiveness in international trade.
