Prices of onions continue to soar despite government approval for imports from India. Both wholesale and retail markets in Chattogram, particularly Khulna Bazaar, remain volatile. Traders claim prices are controlled remotely via mobile phones from border areas, leading to hourly fluctuations.
After a sudden price spike, the government approved imports last Saturday, starting Sunday. Initially, wholesale prices dropped by 20–30 BDT per kg, but the relief was short-lived. On Thursday, imported onions were sold at 120 BDT/kg, with retail prices even higher.
Mohammad Idris Ali, a wholesaler in Khulna Bazaar, stated that import permits were limited to selected traders, restricting supply and maintaining high prices. Domestic onions are expected to hit the market in about 10 days.
Authorities from the National Consumer Rights Protection Directorate have launched inspections to curb irregularities, noting many traders lack proper documentation and manipulate prices. The artificial shortage has kept consumers under pressure despite increased imports.
