Trade Adviser Sheikh Bashiruddin announced that onion import will be opened soon to control the price of onions. He made the statement on Tuesday at a press conference organized by the Ministry of Commerce regarding export target setting.
The Trade Adviser said, "To bring the price of onions under control, import activities will be started quickly. Import initiatives will be taken from countries where onions are available at cheaper rates."
Responding to a question about whether the deterioration of law and order before the election would affect achieving export targets, Sheikh Bashiruddin said the overall law and order situation is very good, although there are some isolated crises. However, these do not pose a significant risk.
Regarding efforts to reduce the trade deficit with the United States, he said, "We hope this deficit will decrease further, but it is not under our control, and no guarantee can be given on this matter. Those who impose tariffs on us will decide."
On trade relations with India, he said a letter has been sent to the Indian Trade Minister, but no response has been received yet. Work is ongoing with the utmost sensitivity.
About new restrictions on jute exports by India, he stated, "India's ban will not have a significant impact on the export target."
Sheikh Bashiruddin further mentioned, "We have a large trade deficit with India, and how traders deal with it is the main issue, but no major problems have arisen in this regard."
The government hopes that these steps will help control onion prices in the domestic market and successfully achieve export targets.
