North Korean leader Kim Jong Un directly supervised the launch of a “strategic cruise missile” from the new 5,000-ton destroyer. The test was conducted as part of capability verification prior to the ship’s formal commissioning.
During a two-day inspection at the Nampo shipyard on the country’s western coast, Kim observed the sea-based missile launch from the destroyer Cho Hyon. State media Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) described the test as a key component of the ship’s “core military capabilities” and hailed it as a “new symbol” of the nation’s naval defense.
Kim stated that production of similar or more advanced warships will be increased. He claimed that efforts to integrate nuclear capabilities into the navy are “progressing satisfactorily.” South Korea’s Yonhap News Agency noted that North Korea often uses the term “strategic” for weapons capable of carrying nuclear warheads.
The Cho Hyon destroyer is the lead ship in North Korea’s new series. Analysts view it as part of the country’s naval modernization program aimed at enhancing maritime defense and attack capabilities.
This program has faced setbacks in the past. In May 2025, another destroyer of the same class at the Chongjin shipyard sank due to a mechanical failure in the launch system, damaging its structure. Kim then described the incident as “criminal negligence.”
The recent missile test comes as Kim pledged economic development and improved living standards at a rare Workers’ Party congress. He emphasized the need for “more active and consistent struggle” for economic reconstruction and public welfare.
Since assuming power, Kim has prioritized military strength, particularly the nuclear program, while also addressing long-term poverty and economic challenges. Observers note that the recent naval test signals North Korea’s unwavering commitment to increasing military capability, despite potential regional tensions.
