No favorable environment for PR system: BNP leader A.Z.M. Zahid Hossain

A.Z.M. Zahid Hossain, member of the BNP Standing Committee, has said that currently there is no favorable environment in the country to implement the Proportional Representation (PR) system. He alleged that certain groups are deliberately raising such proposals to delay elections.

He made the comments on Friday (October 11) afternoon while speaking to journalists after a memorial and prayer session for the recently deceased district BNP Secretary Anisur Rahman at Rangpur District Shilpakala Academy.

Zahid Hossain said, “Those who are demanding the PR system in the name of the people should participate in the elections and raise the issue in Parliament. BNP has faith in the existing electoral system.” He further stated, “As per the commitment given by the Chief Advisor, the national elections will be held by next February, and BNP will provide full cooperation to the Election Commission.”

At the condolence meeting, BNP Joint Secretary Habib un Nabi Khan Sohel said, “Attempts are being made to create confusion regarding BNP’s symbol, which is completely baseless. The party’s Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman will return to the country and participate as a candidate in the next election.”

The session was chaired by Rangpur District BNP Convener Saiful Islam. Other attendees included Central Organizational Secretary Asadul Habib Dulu, Deputy Organizational Secretary Abdul Khalek, and Aminul Islam, among others.

Speakers expressed deep sorrow over the death of Anisur Rahman and conveyed condolences to his family. It is noted that Anisur Rahman passed away on Wednesday morning at Bogura Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital after suffering a heart attack.
