The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has extended the deadline for submitting March VAT returns online until April 23, considering the convenience of businesses. The decision was announced in a notice issued by the e-VAT unit on Tuesday (April 14).
Normally, VAT returns must be submitted by the 15th of each month. However, due to the Pohela Boishakh holiday and technical upgrades in the e-VAT system, many businesses faced difficulties in submitting returns on time.
According to the notice, the deadline was extended in consideration of public interest and the prevailing circumstances. This will allow businesses and industrial establishments additional time to submit their returns.
Under VAT law, failure to submit returns on time results in penalties and interest. Typically, this includes a fine of up to 10,000 taka and a 2 percent monthly interest on unpaid VAT. However, the new extension allows businesses to avoid these penalties if they comply within the revised deadline.
NBR officials said that technical teams are working to improve the online system to make it more user-friendly in the future.
Business leaders have welcomed the decision, saying it will help overcome challenges caused by holidays and technical issues.
