Since joining Inter Miami, Lionel Messi has been breaking record after record. The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner has now made history again by becoming the first player in Major League Soccer (MLS) to score multiple goals in four consecutive matches.
On this historic day for Messi, Inter Miami defeated the New England Revolution 2-1.
The match, held on Thursday (July 10) at Gillette Stadium in Massachusetts, saw Messi give Inter Miami a two-goal lead in the first half. In the 27th minute, taking advantage of a defensive error, Messi scored his first goal inside the penalty box. Just 11 minutes later, from a perfect through pass by Sergio Busquets, Messi scored his second with a low shot from the edge of the box, doubling the lead for himself and his team.
Although Carles Gil scored for New England in the 80th minute to reduce the deficit, Miami held on to their victory. The match was fiercely contested throughout. Miami held 56% possession and took 13 shots, with 3 on target. Meanwhile, New England Revolution took 16 shots, 6 of which were on target.
With Messi’s outstanding performance, Miami secured their fourth consecutive home win in the competition. This means the Florida club remains unbeaten in their last five MLS matches this season.
New England Revolution had multiple chances to equalize but failed to capitalize due to poor finishing. Their wait stretched until the 80th minute when Carles Gil reduced the gap with a powerful shot after receiving a dribble from Tomas Aviles. Still, the home team couldn’t mount an effective comeback.
Currently, in the MLS Eastern Conference, Miami sits fifth with 18 points. FC Cincinnati leads at the top with seven points more. However, Miami has played three fewer matches than the four teams above them, which is encouraging for the club.
