Popular Palestinian political leader Marwan Barghouti has reportedly been subjected to multiple violent attacks in recent weeks in an Israeli prison, according to his lawyer, raising concerns about his safety.
Lawyer Ben Marmareli stated on Telegram that Barghouti, who has been serving multiple life sentences in Israel since 2002, was attacked at least three times in March and April.
He alleged that on April 8, Barghouti was severely beaten in Ganot prison and left bleeding without medical treatment. Earlier, on March 25, he was reportedly beaten during a transfer from Megiddo prison.
Another claim stated that prison guards brought a dog into his cell, forced him to lie on the floor, and the dog attacked him.
His lawyer described the conditions as “harsh and inhumane,” adding that meetings are conducted through glass barriers requiring loud communication.
Despite this, Barghouti is reportedly mentally strong and aware of external developments.
He is a senior leader of the Fatah movement and is considered a significant political figure for a future Palestinian state. He is serving five life sentences related to the Second Intifada.
Israeli authorities have not officially commented on the allegations.
Human rights organizations have expressed growing concern over prisoner safety due to stricter policies.
