With stars like Sachin Tendulkar and Mahendra Singh Dhoni already retired from international cricket, and Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli entering the final phase of their careers, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is preparing to give the team new leadership for the future.

According to Indian media reports, preparations are underway to make Shubman Gill the new captain of the Indian ODI team. Currently, he serves as the Test team captain and as the vice-captain in T20 internationals. The selection committee aims to give Gill sufficient time to lead the team and prove his captaincy skills ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup.

This change has created uncertainty regarding Rohit Sharma’s future. It is believed that the upcoming Australia tour might be his last series as captain. By the 2027 World Cup, Rohit will be 40 years old, making it challenging to maintain form and fitness while playing in just one format.

According to reports, announcing Gill as the ODI captain is now only a matter of time. It is also speculated that after the 2026 T20 World Cup, he may replace Suryakumar Yadav as the new T20 captain of the Indian team.
