PNN News Desk | Dhaka:
A writ petition has been filed in the High Court seeking the suspension of the central student union (JAKSU) election at Jahangirnagar University (JU). A university student submitted the petition to the relevant branch of the High Court on Monday.

However, the specific reasons cited in the writ and details of the hearing have not been disclosed. The campus is currently buzzing with a festive atmosphere ahead of the JAKSU and hall student council elections, being held after 33 years.

Since the university’s establishment in 1972, the JAKSU election has been held nine times. The last election in 1993 was canceled following clashes between students and teachers over the expulsion of a student. Since then, JAKSU and hall student council elections have not taken place.

For the upcoming election on 11 September, candidates from Chhatra Dal, Chhatra Shibir, leftist organizations, and independent candidates are participating.

Previously, multiple writs were filed during the Dhaka University Central Student Union (DUCSU) elections. While the High Court had issued some orders to suspend the elections, the Appellate Division later stayed those orders. The DUCSU election is scheduled to be held on 9 September.
