Lawyer Nizam Uddin Shanto Stabbed to Death in Bagerhat

A lawyer was stabbed to death by unidentified assailants in the Tetultala area of Harikhali in Bagerhat town late Friday night, sending shockwaves through the local community and legal fraternity.

The victim, Nizam Uddin Shanto (42), was attacked while returning home after work.

The incident took place at approximately 1:00 a.m. on Friday (July 24).

Shanto was the son of Torab Ali from Paschim Bhag village under Bagerhat Sadar Upazila and was an active member of the Bagerhat District Bar Association.

According to police and local residents, Shanto was heading home after completing work in the town when a group of assailants launched a sudden attack on him near Tetultala in Harikhali.

He sustained multiple injuries from sharp weapons and is believed to have died at the scene due to the severity of the attack.

Police rushed to the location after receiving information through the national emergency service 999 and local residents. Officers recovered the body and later sent it to the Bagerhat District Hospital morgue for an autopsy.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Shamsul Arefin of Bagerhat Sadar Model Police Station confirmed that the lawyer was killed after being stabbed by unidentified attackers while returning home.

He said the body had been sent for post-mortem examination and that police had launched an investigation into the murder.

The OC added that multiple police teams are working to determine the motive behind the killing, identify those responsible, and bring them to justice. Legal proceedings will continue based on the findings of the investigation.

The brutal killing of a practicing lawyer has sparked widespread concern among fellow legal professionals and local residents, who have demanded a thorough investigation and exemplary punishment for those involved.
