Oscar-winning Spanish actor Javier Bardem appeared at the 2025 Emmy Awards wearing a Palestinian keffiyeh, speaking out strongly against genocide. He stated, “A genocide is taking place in Gaza, and I cannot in any way work with those who support or justify it.”
Bardem made these remarks at the 77th Emmy Awards held at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles. In an interview with Variety, he noted that international genocide research organizations have thoroughly verified the situation and officially declared it genocide. He called for commercial and diplomatic sanctions on Israel and declared, “Free Palestine.”
Prior to the Emmy Awards, more than 3,000 film artists and filmmakers signed an open pledge organized by Film Workers for Palestine, stating they would refuse to work with Israeli companies or production houses involved in genocide or racial discrimination.
Paramount, the production company, criticized the initiative, saying, “The power of storytelling connects people and fosters understanding. Silencing an artist because of their nationality is not the solution.”
In response, Bardem emphasized, “We are not targeting individuals, but the institutions that conceal or support genocide and racial discrimination. We stand with the oppressed. I cannot work with anyone who supports genocide. It’s that simple.”
Other Oscar-winning artists who signed the pledge alongside Bardem include Yorgos Lanthimos, Adam McKay, Olivia Colman, Mark Ruffalo, Emma Stone, and Lily Gladstone.
