New doubts have arisen regarding the previously scheduled November 27 elections for the Central Student Union (Jaksu) and Hall Union at Jagannath University. During a meeting with active student organizations and journalists on Sunday, the University Election Commission indicated that due to various demands, disputes, and disruptions, the elections may be postponed to after December 20.
At the meeting, branch student organization convener Mehedi Hasan Himel and secretary Shamsul Arefin proposed delaying the elections. Himel claimed that certain groups are being given preferential treatment in the election code of conduct. He argued that excluding MPhil and PhD students from voting and restricting access for non-students to the campus is part of a planned “masterplan.” He also said that their party should receive adequate opportunities in election campaigns.
Shamsul Arefin demanded special rules for journalist access and monitoring. He mentioned that any journalist violating the code of conduct would be removed from the center, and the process of issuing pass cards would involve consultation with student leaders. He also cited examples from other campuses, noting that the lack of an indelible ink system could be a reason for postponement.
On the other hand, Jabi Chhatra Shibir president Md. Riazul Islam said that elections should take place by November 27. He stated that a roadmap had been created through student movements, and the university administration and election commission have a moral responsibility to conduct elections on time.
During debates on the code of conduct, student leaders became agitated, slammed tables, and raised their voices, prompting objections from commission members. The situation was later reported to Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Rezaul Karim in a meeting.
Sources indicated that the commission will not announce the draft schedule on Tuesday either. Due to student demands, the possibility of extending campaign time and holding elections after December 20 is being considered.
A commission member said, “We will act reasonably. Unreasonable demands will not be met. We want to conduct fair elections impartially.” Chief Election Commissioner Professor Dr. Mostafa Hasan stated, “Yesterday’s behavior was unacceptable for students. Elections will be held in December. All parties will have the opportunity to organize, but not all demands will be fulfilled.”
