An Iranian court has sentenced Jafar Panahi, the Cannes Film Festival Golden Palm-winning director, to one year in prison. Additionally, he has been banned from traveling for two years and prohibited from joining any political or social organizations. Panahi’s lawyer, Mostafa Nili, stated that an appeal will be filed against the verdict.
Panahi was accused of involvement in anti-state propaganda activities, though Iranian authorities have not released detailed information regarding the charges.
Currently residing in France, Panahi is in the United States promoting his new film “It Was Just and Accident”. He recently won three awards at the Gotham Awards in New York and is scheduled to participate in discussions at the Marrakech Film Festival in Morocco.
Panahi has a history of conflict with Iranian authorities. In 2010, he was banned from traveling abroad and making films due to supporting anti-government protests and producing critical films. Although later sentenced to six years in prison, he was released on bail after only two months.
Despite restrictions, Panahi has made internationally acclaimed films such as “This Is Not a Film” and “Taxi”. He was arrested again in 2022 but released seven months later. There has been no reaction from Panahi regarding the new sentence.
