Gianni Infantino celebrated ten years as president of FIFA, the world football governing body. On 26 February 2026, U.S. President Donald Trump congratulated him on this milestone.
Trump praised Infantino’s leadership in a message on Truth Social, stating that Infantino’s role in FIFA over the past decade has been important for global football and that he hopes to see him continue in the position for many more years.
When he assumed office in 2016, FIFA was facing a major crisis. During former president Sepp Blatter’s tenure, corruption scandals had damaged the organization’s reputation. Infantino pledged administrative reforms and financial stability upon taking office.
Supporters claim he stabilized FIFA and expanded football globally. Critics, however, argue that transparency and ethical concerns remain in some decisions.
Infantino’s rise was also influenced by the European football context, as UEFA mentor Michel Platini faced sanctions, altering the election landscape in Infantino’s favor.
During his tenure, controversies emerged, including labor rights issues at the 2022 World Cup, participation concerns amid international conflicts, and political implications for host countries in the 2026 World Cup, set to be held in the U.S., Mexico, and Canada.
Under Infantino, investments in women’s football and prize money increased, maternity protections were introduced, and technical systems were expanded. The Video Assistant Referee (VAR) and semi-automated offside technology were implemented, bringing significant changes to international football.
Re-elected in 2019 and 2023, FIFA’s statutes allow him to remain in office until 2031. His leadership will shape the future direction of global football.
