A military transport plane crashed near La Paz, Bolivia, killing at least 20 people and injuring over 30. The accident occurred Friday evening during landing in bad weather conditions.

The Bolivian Air Force’s Hercules C-130 transport plane attempted to land at El Alto International Airport. During landing, it skidded off the runway and landed on a nearby road, hitting passing vehicles, resulting in casualties.

Police officer Rene Tambo reported that around 20 people were killed, though the number could rise. Defense Minister Marcelo Salinas said the plane came to a stop in an open field after losing control. A fire broke out following the crash, which was quickly controlled by firefighters.

Eyewitnesses reported heavy hail and thunderstorms during the crash. Videos circulating on social media showed chaotic scenes at the site. People tried to collect newly printed banknotes scattered among the wreckage, prompting security forces to disperse the crowd using water cannons and tear gas.

The aircraft had six crew members, two of whom are still missing, according to an Air Force general. An investigation has begun into the cause of the crash.

Notably, La Paz, situated at approximately 3,650 meters above sea level, is considered the highest administrative capital in the world.
