The wave of excitement that rose in Darjeeling hills in 2007 was not only about a reality show’s success—it was a celebration of the Gorkha community’s identity. At the center of that emotion was Kolkata Police constable turned national star Prashant Tamang. However, the final chapter of this pride-filled story has now brought sorrow. The winner of the third season of Indian Idol, singer and actor Prashant Tamang, has passed away.
He died last Sunday at his residence in New Delhi at the age of 43. According to Indian media sources, he suffered complications due to brain hemorrhage. His wife Geeta Thapa rushed him to the hospital, but doctors declared him dead. He is survived by his mother, two sisters, and his wife.
Prashant Tamang’s rise was a unique story. Growing up in the hill town of Tumsung, he lost his father at a young age and had to leave school. Out of necessity, he joined the Kolkata Police band, where his musical talent gradually gained recognition. In 2007, by participating in Indian Idol, he brought Darjeeling to India’s national entertainment stage for the first time.
Despite criticism from judges in the final, he won the audience vote. This victory became a symbol of respect and confidence for the Gorkha community. Celebrations, rallies, and campaigns spread throughout the hills. After winning Indian Idol, he released his album “Dhanyabad.” Additionally, his song “Bir Gorkhali” became an emblem of the hills’ people’s emotions.
Apart from music, he established his presence in acting. In 2010, he debuted on the big screen with the Nepali film “Gorkha Paltan.” Subsequently, he acted in several Nepali movies and appeared in television and web series. Recently, he gained recognition among the new generation viewers through the second season of the popular web series “Patal Lok.”
Prashant Tamang also added a unique dimension to political history. He became a silent inspiration for hill people during various phases of the Gorkhaland movement. He expressed interest in writing songs for future struggles as well.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed grief at his passing. In a social media message, she conveyed deep sorrow at the sudden death of Prashant Tamang and expressed condolences to his grieving family.
Although the story of this ordinary hill boy becoming a national star has ended, Prashant Tamang will remain a bright symbol of hope, struggle, and identity for the Gorkha community.
