India’s match against West Indies in the Super 8 stage of the 2026 T20 World Cup on Sunday has effectively become a quarter-final. The winning team will secure a semi-final spot; the loser will exit the tournament.

Ahead of this crucial match, India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir’s future was questioned by former England pacer Steve Harmison. In a talkSPORT interview, Harmison said that failing to defend the title this edition could put Gambhir under pressure.

Harmison emphasized that coaching an internationally competitive team requires not just strategy but also leadership. He noted Gambhir’s strong character and straightforward approach often place him at the center of debate. However, his firm stance in selecting assistant coaches was seen positively.

India is the defending champion. Having won the title in Barbados in 2024, they field a strong team again this edition. Under captain Suryakumar Yadav, India won four consecutive group stage matches to reach the Super 8, but a heavy loss to South Africa in the second round put them under pressure. Victory against Zimbabwe later secured a semi-final spot.

Currently, India and West Indies are tied on points in Group 1, making Sunday’s match an unwritten “knockout.” Analysts say the result will determine not only the semi-final fate but also discussions about India’s coaching setup.
