A man allegedly hacked his wife to death with a sharp weapon before hanging himself following a family dispute in Shibganj upazila of Chapainawabganj. The incident took place on Friday (September 4) afternoon in Rasiknagar Babupur village under Noyalabhanga Union of the upazila.
The deceased couple have been identified as Monowara Begum, 60, and her husband Mofizul Haque, 75.
According to police and local sources, the husband and wife had been involved in disputes over various family matters for a long time. On Friday afternoon, they again became involved in an argument. At one point, Mofizul Haque allegedly took a sharp hasua (sickle-like agricultural blade) from inside the house and repeatedly hacked his wife, Monowara Begum. She reportedly died at the scene.
Afterward, Mofizul Haque allegedly hanged himself from a hook attached to the ceiling fan inside the house.
Shapla Begum, the daughter-in-law of Mofizul Haque, said that she returned home in the afternoon after attending an invitation and found the door of the room locked from inside. She then looked through a window and saw Monowara Begum lying inside in a blood-soaked condition.
After informing local residents, they came to the scene and broke open the door to enter the room. They found Monowara Begum dead and Mofizul Haque hanging inside.
After being informed, police went to the scene in the evening and recovered the bodies of both victims. The bodies were later sent to the morgue of Chapainawabganj District Hospital for autopsies.
Additional Superintendent of Police of Shibganj Police Station ANM Wasim Firoz said police initially believed that Mofizul Haque hacked his wife to death with a hasua following an argument between the couple over a family dispute. He then allegedly hanged himself.
He further said the actual cause of death and details of the incident would be confirmed after the autopsy reports are received.
