A man named Md. Sumon (35) has been arrested by RAB on charges of murdering his wife by slitting her throat and attempting to hide the body by dismembering it into 11 pieces in the Roufabad area of Chittagong's Bayezid Bostami Thana. He was arrested last night, four days after the incident, from Fulbaria village in Bijoynagar Upazila of Brahmanbaria.
At a press conference held at the RAB-7 office in Chittagong, RAB's Commanding Officer, Lieutenant Colonel Hafizur Rahman, stated that after living in Saudi Arabia for a long time, Sumon had returned to Bangladesh due to visa complications and was working as a pickup driver in Chittagong. A marital dispute with his wife had been ongoing since his return.
During questioning, Sumon told RAB that a heated argument with his wife began on the night of July 9 after 6-7 unknown youths came to their apartment. At one point, Sumon killed his wife by stabbing her with two knives. He then dismembered her body into 11 pieces with the intention of hiding it and tried to flush the body parts down the toilet.
The crime was first noticed by the apartment's security guard, Mashiur Rahman, who heard an unusual foul smell and sounds of movement from the flat. His suspicion grew because the sound of the toilet flushing was continuous for a long time. When he went to the flat and knocked, Sumon spoke incoherently and refused to let him in. The guard then forced his way inside and saw bloodstains in various parts of the room and what appeared to be human flesh in the bathroom.
The guard immediately locked the door from the outside and went to seek help from the locals. Seizing the opportunity, Sumon escaped by cutting through a window grill. Police later arrived at the scene and recovered the dismembered body of the woman. The victim’s elder brother, Md. Anowar Hossain Rubel, has filed a murder case against Sumon at the Bayezid Thana.
