The pass rate in this year's Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) examination under the Jashore Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education has dropped to 44.92 percent. The rate is 5.32 percentage points lower than last year. The number of students achieving GPA-5 has also declined significantly. This year, 3,228 students secured GPA-5, which is 2,767 fewer than the previous year.

The results were officially announced at 11:00 am on Saturday (October 31) at the conference room of the Jashore Education Board by its Secretary, Professor Dr. Abdul Matin.

The board authorities, however, have rejected the idea that the decline in the pass rate and GPA-5 numbers should be viewed as an academic disaster. They attributed the changes to modifications in the examination system and answer-script evaluation process, arguing that this year's results more accurately reflect students' actual academic performance.

The board secretary said, "We want quality, not quantity. Those who remain attentive to their studies will achieve good results."

This year, a total of 112,791 students from 571 educational institutions across 10 districts appeared in the examination under the Jashore Education Board. The examinations were held at 240 centres, and 50,668 students passed. A total of 43 candidates were expelled for various irregularities during the examination period.

Subject-wise results indicate that English was the weakest area for students. The pass rate in the subject stood at just 54.95 percent. In Information and Communication Technology (ICT), the pass rate was 67.84 percent. Meanwhile, 69.71 percent passed Higher Mathematics, 77.48 percent passed Chemistry and 76.22 percent passed Accounting.

Board Secretary Professor Dr. Abdul Matin said the low pass rate in English had negatively affected the overall results. Students also failed to achieve the expected performance in ICT.

He said the board was planning to introduce special initiatives involving educational institutions under the Inter-Education Board Coordination Committee to address students' weaknesses in English. The initiatives would focus on teacher training and ensuring greater attention to students in classrooms.

In the district-wise results, Jashore recorded the highest pass rate at 52.94 percent. Khulna ranked second with 46.65 percent, followed by Chuadanga in third place with 46.13 percent.

The pass rates in other districts were 45.38 percent in Kushtia, 43.45 percent in Satkhira, 41.98 percent in Jhenaidah, 40.76 percent in Meherpur, 38.86 percent in Bagerhat and 37.36 percent in Magura. Narail recorded the lowest pass rate at 36.78 percent.

This year, all candidates passed in only three educational institutions under the Jashore Education Board. The institutions are Jhenaidah Cadet College, Khalishpur Navy Anchorage School and College in Khulna, and Bright Model School and College in Chuadanga.

All 43 candidates from Jhenaidah Cadet College, 61 candidates from Khalishpur Navy Anchorage School and College, and 23 candidates from Bright Model School and College passed the examination. Last year, five institutions had achieved a 100 percent pass rate.

Meanwhile, no student from 16 educational institutions under the board managed to pass this year's examination. Of these institutions, six are in Khulna, two each in Kushtia and Magura, and two in Satkhira. The remaining institutions are located in Meherpur, Jhenaidah, Jashore and Narail, with one institution in each district.

The six institutions in Khulna are Model Women's College in Dumuria, Independent Ideal College in Khulna Sadar, Kapilmuni Sachoari Vidyamandir, Koyra Shakbaria School and College, Comrade Ratan Sen Collegiate Girls' School in Rupsha, and Khulna Newsprint Mills School and College.

The institutions in Kushtia are Haji Nurul Islam College and Jagannathpur Ideal College. The two institutions in Magura are Buzruk Srikundi College and Gopinathpur M.A. Khalek School and College. Islamia Women's College and A.K. Fazlul Haque M.C.A. College in Satkhira are also on the list of institutions with zero passes.

In addition, no candidates passed from Morka Jagaran College in Meherpur, Mallik Shahidul Islam Technical College in Jhenaidah, Sabujpolli College in Manirampur upazila of Jashore, and Makrail Karim Khalek Solaiman Institute in Narail.

Board Secretary Professor Dr. Abdul Matin said the institutions with zero pass rates had previously been served show-cause notices over their poor performance. He said there had been some improvement, as the number of such institutions had declined from 20 last year to 16 this year.

He added that the board was considering imposing special conditions when renewing the recognition of these institutions.
