Housewife raped in Sherpur, volunteer party leader arrested

A man named Enamul Mia has been arrested and handed over to police by local residents on charges of raping a housewife in Sherpur city. The victim filed a rape case at Sherpur Sadar Police Station on Sunday morning (May 24).

The accused Enamul Mia is a resident of Sazborkhila area of Sherpur municipality. He is a former joint general secretary of the district Chhatra Dal and currently known as a member of the volunteer wing of the party.

Local sources say the victim housewife lived as a tenant in the accused’s house with her husband. Allegations suggest that Enamul had long been harassing her with indecent proposals through social media. After the matter became known, several arbitration meetings were held with the presence of family members and locals. Since then, the accused reportedly became resentful.

The complaint states that the housewife was forcibly raped on Saturday afternoon. She later informed her husband and family members. The news spread in the area, and enraged locals detained Enamul around 9 PM on Saturday and handed him over to police. They also staged protests demanding exemplary punishment.

Sherpur Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Sohel Rana said that Enamul was rescued from the crowd and taken to the police station. After the victim filed a case on Sunday morning, steps are being taken to show him arrested and send him to court.

However, local volunteer party leaders have denied the allegations. Former district Chhatra Dal president and current volunteer wing convener Niamul Hasan Anand claimed that Enamul is being deliberately framed. He said there was a prior relationship between the accused and the woman, and the incident has been portrayed as rape in a planned manner.

The incident has created widespread sensation in the area. Police said investigations are ongoing to verify the truth of the allegations.
