Hasanat Abdullah alleges bias by BNP and police in Jhenaidah

Hasanat Abdullah, chief organizer (southern region) of the National Citizens Party (NCP) and Member of Parliament from Cumilla-4, has alleged that the current government is attempting to bring the police administration and judiciary under party influence. He claimed that the independence of the judiciary is being undermined and the police are being used for political purposes.

He made these remarks at a press conference held at Payer Chattar in Jhenaidah town on Monday afternoon. The press conference was organized by the district NCP in connection with the case filed over the recent egg-throwing incident on NCP central coordinator Nasiruddin Patwary and the subsequent clashes.

Hasanat Abdullah said that the actions of law enforcement over the past few days suggest that the expected change after the July uprising has not taken place. According to him, although there was an expectation of a neutral police force, allegations of political influence are now emerging.

He further said that in the past, the police were used to implement government decisions, and similar tendencies are still being observed. He also alleged pressure is being exerted on police officers through transfers and promotions for political use.

Regarding the judiciary, he said judicial structures are being weakened and judges’ independence is being restricted. He claimed there are attempts to influence the judiciary through administrative control.

Referring to recent clashes in Jhenaidah, he alleged that police did not act neutrally in arresting NCP leader Tareq Reza and Youth Force leaders. He also criticized delays in filing a case regarding the attack on Nasiruddin Patwary.

Other leaders of the National Youth Force, including organizational secretary Rifat Rashid, also spoke at the press conference.

Later, NCP and Youth Force activists brought out a protest rally in the town. The recent clashes and counter-cases have created tension in the local political situation.
