Bail granted to NCP leader Tareq Reza in Jhenaidah clash case, bail plea of Oyon rejected

Tareq Reza, the arrested joint member secretary of the National Citizens Party (NCP), has been granted bail in a case filed over a clash between activists of the Chhatra Dal and the National Citizens Party (NCP) in Jhenaidah. However, the bail application of National Youth Force organizer Oyon Rahman Khan in the same case has been rejected by the court.

The court delivered the order after a hearing on Monday in Jhenaidah. The matter was confirmed by NCP’s Jhenaidah district joint coordinator Hamid Parvez.

Court sources said that defense lawyers filed bail petitions for Tareq Reza and Oyon Rahman Khan. After hearing, the court granted bail to Tareq Reza but rejected Oyon’s application.

Lawyers representing the accused included NCP legal affairs secretary Zahirul Islam Musa, assistant legal secretary Humayra Noor, and several others.

Earlier, on Sunday, police arrested Tareq Reza in a case filed by a Chhatra Dal leader and sent him to jail through court order.

The incident originated on Friday in front of the Old Collectorate Jame Mosque in Jhenaidah town. After Friday prayers, tension arose between Chhatra Dal and NCP activists after an egg was thrown at NCP central chief coordinator Nasiruddin Patwary, which later escalated into a clash.

Following the incident, Tareq Reza filed a case that night naming 8 people including district Chhatra Dal president, general secretary, former president, and Islami University branch convener, along with a total of 123 accused.

The next morning, a counter-case was filed by former district Chhatra Dal president Enamul Kabir. His case named Tareq Reza and 22 activists of NCP and anti-discrimination student movement, along with 60 unidentified persons.

The clash and counter-cases have created tension in the political environment of Jhenaidah. Additional police have been deployed in the area to maintain law and order, according to local sources.
