Four Bangladeshi expatriates have been killed in a road accident in Saudi Arabia. All of the deceased are reportedly from the Sylhet Division. They were travelling to Jeddah airport to return home when they were involved in the tragic accident.
The accident occurred at around 2pm local time on Monday (September 7) in the Al-Khurmah area while they were travelling from Taif to Jeddah airport. The victims had already purchased airline tickets to return home.
The identities of two of the deceased have been confirmed. They are Abdul Karim and Khalid Ahmed, residents of Lamar Taluk village in the Gachhbari area of Dakshin Banigram Union in Kanaighat upazila of Sylhet. Local Union Parishad Chairman Lokman Uddin confirmed their deaths.
According to local sources, Abdul Karim and Khalid Ahmed had been living in Saudi Arabia for a long time. They had recently made preparations to return home. Carrying their belongings, they had set out for Jeddah airport to meet their families.
However, they never completed that journey home. Before reaching the airport, the vehicle carrying them met with an accident in the Al-Khurmah area. All four people inside the vehicle were killed. The driver was also among the deceased.
The identities of the other two victims have not yet been confirmed. However, local sources said one of them might have been from Moulvibazar and the other from Sunamganj. It is believed that two people from those districts had been living in Saudi Arabia with the deceased.
When news of the accident reached relatives in Bangladesh, grief descended on Lamar Taluk village in Kanaighat. The wait of two families for their loved ones, who had been preparing to return home after years of living abroad, ended with the tragic news.
Relevant authorities are working on the process of bringing the bodies back to Bangladesh and completing the necessary formalities related to the accident.
