Five killed as sand-laden truck overturns into a market in Puthia, Rajshahi

In Puthia Upazila of Rajshahi, five people were killed when a sand-laden truck lost control and overturned into a local market. The incident has cast a shadow of grief over the area.

On Thursday (1 January) around 7:40 AM, a truck traveling from Rajshahi to Natore entered the weekly banana market in Jhalmalia area of Puthia. Several people were seriously injured when the truck overturned, and five of them were later confirmed dead.

OC Mozammel Hossain Kazi of Paba Highway Police confirmed the incident, stating that preliminary reports suggest the driver lost control due to dense fog.

The deceased are:

  • Siam (15), son of Shaheen from Kafuria Union, Natore District

  • Munok (35), son of Akkel Pramanik from the same union

  • Sentu (40), son of Shoim Uddin from Salainagar village, Bagatipara Upazila

  • Islam Uddin (60), son of Mahatab Ali from Askarpur area, Charghat Upazila

  • Raihan Hossain (45), son of Jallil from Khutipara village, Baneshwar Union, Puthia

Eyewitnesses reported that the market was crowded from early morning as it was a market day at Jhalmalia. In the dense fog, the speeding truck suddenly entered the market, causing casualties.

After the accident, police and locals rescued the injured and sent them to the hospital. The truck has been seized, and legal proceedings are underway.
