Fire at Madrasa and Orphanage in Laksam

A severe fire broke out at Laksam Salehiya Alia Diniya Madrasa and Orphanage in the Mishri area of Laksam Municipality, Cumilla. The incident occurred on Monday (March 9) around 9 PM. The fire destroyed cash, furniture, and various other items inside the madrasa, causing an estimated loss of around BDT 1 million, according to the madrasa authorities.

Madrasa principal Mohtamim Mohammad Ullah said that at the time of the fire, teachers and students were performing Tarawih prayers at the nearby mosque. A student noticed the fire inside the building and shouted, allowing everyone to evacuate quickly. Locals then informed the Laksam Fire Service and Civil Defense.

Two units of the fire service arrived promptly at the scene and began controlling the fire. Although the fire was eventually brought under control after extensive efforts, cash, furniture, and other essential items inside the madrasa were completely destroyed.

Some students mentioned that new clothes purchased for them for Eid were also destroyed in the fire, causing them great distress.

Senior Station Officer of Laksam Fire Service and Civil Defense, Md. Kabirul Islam, stated that the fire was likely caused by an electrical short circuit. Further investigations into the incident are ongoing.
