A fire broke out at a BNP candidate’s election camp in Rajganj Union, Begumganj Upazila, Noakhali. The fire damaged the camp's furniture and three adjacent shops. BNP leaders and workers claimed that the incident was deliberate.
The fire occurred in the early hours of Monday (2 February) at the BNP election camp located next to Baki Pur Government Primary School in the Rajganj area of Noakhali-3 constituency.
Local sources reported that during Fajr prayers, people heading to the mosque noticed the fire at the camp and nearby shops and raised an alarm. When an announcement was made through the mosque’s loudspeaker, locals rushed to the scene and tried to extinguish the fire. Despite their efforts bringing the fire under control, the BNP election office and a bicycle mart were completely destroyed, and two other shops were partially damaged.
Murad Ziaur Rahman Sumon, election coordinator for the BNP candidate in Noakhali-3, alleged that the fire was not accidental and appeared to target the BNP camp specifically, with nearby shops set ablaze to divert attention.
OC Shamsuzzaman of Begumganj Police Station said the police quickly reached the site and are reviewing CCTV footage from the surrounding area. Necessary legal action will be taken after the investigation. The incident caused panic in the area, and locals demanded swift identification and punishment of the culprits.
